La Cappella Pappacoda Di Napoli

La Cappella Pappacoda Di Napoli

If you stay at our B&B you will have access to all the major monuments of the city.
Artusio Pappacoda, Grand Seneschal of the Kingdom and Councilor of the royal family of Anjou, had the chapel built in 1415 dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist as indicated by the cartouche, supported by angels, and engraved with Franco-Gallic letters placed on the architrave of the portal. In yellow tuff and dark piperno stone, the facade is adorned with a marble portal sculpted by Antonio Baboccio da Piperno, an artist active in Milan and Messina, much in demand by the d’Anjou-Durrase dynasty, also author of the portal of the Cathedral of Naples .

Majestic and floral, the Pappacoda portal, very rich in its decorative motifs, is the expression of late-Gothic sculpture still present in Naples in the middle of the fifteenth century and subject to the influences of France and Burgundy. Splayed and streamlined by the effect of the cusps, it ends at the top with the statue of the Archangel Michael. Further back from the facade, the bell tower, in tuff masonry, has decorative motifs in piperno at the top with mullioned windows, inserts of columns and heads, fragments from the Roman era, ancient finds often used in medieval constructions.
